The survey
Off-season, twice, before a route is ever sold
Maps show distance. Surveys show the ferry that no longer runs in May and the hut that closes on Tuesdays.
Every catalog route is walked twice off-season by the guide who leads it. What changes gets written into the route card: distances, tide windows, plan B. When you travel, you carry the same printed cards the survey produced.
